Driving on dangerous roads

Megan Sanders ~ Staff Writer

We all run into those “great” drivers on the road, the ones who think the rules don’t apply to them. I’ve had many fun encounters with drivers who can’t seem to understand the rules of the road, and maybe even need to take another driver’s test.

First and foremost, drivers need to learn that the purpose of traffic lights is to direct traffic. If the light is green, but there is no left arrow, check the traffic coming towards you before you turn left, okay? Traffic will not just stop to let you go by regardless if it’s your turn or not.

Then there are the drivers who go way over the speed limit. They switch lanes back and forth to avoid slowing down, putting the rest of us at risk. These are probably the most dangerous drivers. Yes, you are a great driver, but please, be considerate and slow down a bit.

Some drivers are obviously using an electronic device, whether it’s legal or not. I’ve passed countless drivers driving 10 below who have had their turn signal on for the past six miles, only to see them talking on their cell phone. Some of us would really like to survive this drive.

Then there are all you newly licensed drivers out there. Let’s face it, for the most part, you drive like grandmothers, especially when your parents are with you. Care to speed up a little? We’d like to get to our destination before we die of old age, thank you very much. Even so, I’d rather be stuck behind you than endangered by the drag racers that frequent side streets.

Occasionally, you’ll also find drivers like me, who forget about their headlights and brake lights, and maybe the fact that they aren’t working. I’ve almost hit cars who have both brake lights out. Please, guys: it’s dangerous. Fix your lights.

So let’s make a deal. Can we all pay attention, go the speed limit (or slightly above), and make sure your turn signals and brake lights are working? And while you’re at it, don’t drink and drive. Once again, I would like to survive high school in one piece.
