Hold on to your seats: These movies have taken off

Ryan McNally ~ Staff Writer

Are you stuck at home this spring break? Bummer. For your sake, I reviewed three movies that will allow you to take a trip without leaving your hometown. Hopefully, this could be more exciting than sitting at home playing Parcheesi with your siblings.

As an avid moviegoer, I am qualified to publicly express my dislike for two of these movies; all three are on a scale out of five with one being hated it and five being The Shawshank Redemption. Sit back and enjoy your trip through these feature films.

Remember Me
Starring: Robert Pattinson, Pierce Brosnan

2 out of 5 stars, 10 out of 5 stars if I liked Twilight.

We begin our trip with this romantic drama set in New York. Disclaimer: I am a boy who does not like so called “chick flicks.” If I did enjoy movies in this genre, I would have given it ten stars: five for the beautiful romance between the leads, and five for Edward Cullen. However, I was told that if I trashed this movie the female editors wouldn’t run my story; instead, I’ll answer three questions that indirectly express my feelings.

Was there a best friend who was much more interesting that Edward? Yes there was!

Did Pierce Brosnan talk with a silly New York accent? You bet he did! (I’ll admit, it wasn’t his fault, I can’t do an Irish accent let alone a Dublin accent, yet it was no James Bond).

Did Edward show his extraordinary acting talent? Absofreakinglutely he did. And yes, “abso-freaking-lutely” was a direct quote from the movie.

In all seriousness, the majority of the film was an average romantic drama, yet I felt its ending to be insensitive and exploitative of a real tragedy that affected the lives of many Americans rather than fictitious heartthrob vampires.

Green Zone
Starring Matt Damon, Amy Ryan, Greg Kinnear

4 out of 5 stars.

Our trip continues with a visit to Iraq in the Paul Greengrass film, Green Zone. This movie is based off the book “Imperial Life in the Emerald City,” which apparently is not the sequel to The Wizard of Oz.

The film was basically Bourne Four, with the exception that Pamela Landy was played by Mad-Eye Moody (yes, from Harry Potter).

The film was intense, engaging and visually interesting (I sat through the movie wondering how they got the film footage to look like Baghdad). I did receive my complementary Paul Greengrass headache from all of the camera shaking. It did make viewing the intense action sequences slightly annoying but more realistic.

The plot was exciting, Matt Damon was his usual awesome self, although he wore a scarf the whole movie, which was odd.

In terms of an Iraq War film, it was no Hurt Locker, but definitely a film I enjoyed watching.

Alice in Wonderland
Starring Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway

2.5 out of 5 stars.

Our last stop on our tour is Wonderland… yeah, I know it’s a stretch. Unlike the original Disney film, this version follows Alice in her return visit to Wonderland (or Underland if you want to get technical).

Strangely, I found that this movie wasn’t weird enough. Confusion and oddities were important to my enjoyment of the original, perhaps because I was 13 when I watched it, and I was in middle school, which was a confusing and odd place.

Nevertheless it seemed as if Tim Burton was playing this one safe, seeing as at the end, everything made sense. Then again, I’m not the biggest fan of Burton remakes, specifically not Charlie and the Chocolate Factory that’s inhabited by a creepy, creepy, creepy, creepy… creepy Johnny Depp.

Anyway, Hathaway made a great White Queen, Alice was great despite her boring lines, and Snape (yes, also from Harry Potter) was excellent at voicing the blue caterpillar (maybe I only enjoyed his voicing because I imagined the caterpillar saying “Potter, ten points from Gryffindor,” which would have been the strange lines needed for this film’s success.

So if you want to see a run of the mill CGI adventure story, that has Snape as a talking caterpillar, then this is the movie for you. Did I mention that they left out the tea party?

Hopefully these films will add a little travel to your otherwise travel-less vacation. Or just have a Mad Tea Party of your own (I’m still mad there were no dancing cups).
