Romance runs dry: break ups common pre-Valentine’s Day
Megan Clemens ~ Staff Writer
Ah, Valentine’s Day. The flowers. The candy. The cards.
And the break ups?
A 2007 Yahoo! Survey confirmed--and local divorce attorneys agreed-- that between the holiday season and Valentine’s Day, people are more than twice as likely to end their relationship than any other time of the year.
Breeanna Oliver, a secretary at Shaw, Jacobs & Associates, a St. Charles law firm specializing in divorce said, “There is definitely an increase in the number of people that file for divorce starting in December up until February.”
A quick surf of the headlines supports the theory. John and Elizabeth Edwards filed separated Wednesday. Brad Pitt and Angelina are supposedly breaking up--again. Tragically, so are Ronnie and Sammi of “Jersey Shore” fame.
Celebs aren’t the only ones throwing their towels in on relationships between the winter holidays and Valentine’s Day. Many of East’s students have done the same recently. A senior girl, who asked that her name be withheld, was one of the many who found herself falling out of love last January.
She felt that it “would be really mean to ruin his Christmas season” if she had broken up with him during the holidays.
However, she also felt that it would have been unfair to stick it out through Valentine’s Day. “I didn’t want him to [spend money for a gift on me] when I knew I was going to break up with him.”
From a selfless, compassionate standpoint it would be too cruel to dump somebody right before the holidays. After all, you wouldn’t want to ruin their most wonderful time of the year.
From a more self-centered, “the world revolves around me” angle, it’s always nice to have someone to bring to holiday parties, or cozy up with as the snow falls.
Sometimes you can’t break up with someone during the holidays because there are too many commitments. You might have already invested in their gift or have invited them to your family and work holiday parties.
However, once the New Year rolls around, many people want to focus on their resolutions, like getting a better love life and making more time for themselves and their own needs. As Valentine’s Day approaches, they realize they would rather be spending their time, and their money on somebody else.
If you are one of the many breaking the bad news or among the dumpees during this not-so-lovely period in time, you’re not alone.
So go ahead and throw that anti-Valentine’s Day party, pop in “He’s just not that into you,”and “grab yourself some ribs and some ice cream.” Chances are you’ll have plenty of single people to share it all with.
And when this whole “break up season” dies down we’ll finally be into spring, the season of rebirth, and maybe the rebirth of your love life and a new relationship.
